Welcome to our new Coach!
by Jemma Norton // April 2018
Hi! My name is Jemma and I am the new Coach at Dog School Devon. I’m here to tell you a little bit about myself, so here goes!
I have worked with dogs for the last 5 years, I used to run some fun agility classes and puppy classes then spent just under 2 years at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home Old Windsor, where I worked with a massive range of dogs with all sorts of funny personalities and behavioural quirks– I have truly seen everything from cheeky Chihuahuas to over-friendly Ovcharkas! I’m currently completing my Tellington TTouch Practitioner training. I am originally from Devon so I was very excited to be getting involved with Dog School back in my home county.
Outside of work, I love rugby, I support the Exeter Chiefs alongside my local teams. I am hoping to get back on the pitch myself soon enough. Horses are also a big passion of mine and I have ridden since I was little, I love going out for a good gallop!
I have a 6-year-old Beagle called Lily, I have had her since she was a puppy and she is truly a girl’s best friend. We have taken part in all sorts of activities such as scent work, agility, flyball and Tellington TTouch Training. Like me, Lily has an adventurous spirit so we like to have a go at lots of fun things.
Over the last 2 weeks, I have been settling into Dog School and getting to know all the lovely dogs in our classes. I have been so impressed with how hard everyone has been working outside of classes, the difference in the dogs in between classes has been just awesome!
Recently I have been loving using egg boxes as enrichment for Lily, so much that I had to share this tip with you all. Scatter your dog’s food in an empty egg box, then pop it on the floor and allow them to sniff and play whilst they get their food out. Boxes are so good as they can be used for any type of food, plus lots of dogs get real fun out of ripping them to shreds. Lily has mastered this, so I now shut the lid on the egg box, which she opens really gently then bashes the box around the kitchen!
I will update you all soon on all the exciting things I get up to as I settle into Dog School. Our new classes starting in Moreleigh are filling up fast and I can’t wait to meet the wonderful dogs and their owners.
