Dog School Case Study – Ziggy!

Sometimes when we have a spare place in one of our classes, we invite a Dog from our Rehoming Centre in Ballymena to come along. We did this recently for Ziggy - an 8 month old Collie Cross who had been returned to Dogs Trust when her previous home did not work out. Ziggy has a great personality and is extremely affectionate but can be a little nervous at times so we decided to invite her classes to help build her confidence.

Our Coach Sascha brought Ziggy to classes with Poppy (a former resident of Dogs Trust Ballymena) and Dutch (a lovely lab puppy). In week one, she practiced her settle and picked it up beautifully as you can see in the below picture!

We then taught Ziggy to sit and lie down and we began to practice this in different locations and on different surfaces so that Ziggy would learn that “sit” means she should sit whether she is at Dog School, at home, on a pavement or in the park!

Ziggy practiced her loose lead walking around obstacles and near other dogs (who she had initially been a little nervous of) and did fantastically! Here she is walking over one of our weird and wonderful distractions.

After completing week 2 of her Dog School training class, Ziggy was booked for a new home which everyone is thrilled about and we will encourage her owners to return and finish classes with Ziggy as she is a very smart girl!

If you are interested in any of our classes we cover the Antrim, Belfast and Ballymena areas with a variety of time options that should suit most people.
